Purpose:
The purpose of this course is to recruit and train grade 11 and 12 candidates to become tutors who will provide support to grade 9 students who are striving readers for a full year.

The purpose of this course is to recruit and train grade 11 and 12 candidates to become tutors who will provide support to grade 9 students who are striving readers for a full year.
Requirements:
- Applicants will be required to successfully complete a diagnostic assessment in order to be considered a candidate for tutoring.
- Candidates will be trained in the Barton Reading System, an Orton-Gillingham influenced simultaneously multisensory, explicit and systematic phonics program.
- All successful candidates will be required to complete 18 hours of intense, in-class training in order to become a Barton certified reading tutor (Levels 1, 2, and 3). All training and materials are provided to candidates at no cost.
- Upon completion of the training, candidates will receive a certificate of completion and will be paired with a striving reader from grade 9.
- Candidates will be required to show mastery of the training before being paired with a striving reader.
- Candidates will tutor their students during the Reading Co-Op class (period 2). All training and subsequent tutoring are done at school, during school hours.
- Candidates must remain in the reading co-op class for the full year (2 credits provided)
